Weddings

Most of this week was spent preparing for Sherilyn Stetler's wedding Friday night. The general design of the cake was a square (18, 14, 10 and 6 inches) in which each layer was to be a different flavor (butter, chocolate, strawberry and marble) and have a different design. That was a challenge but very fun! She allowed me enough space to be creative which is always nice. The bottom tier I decorated with fondant stripes that I'd brushed with pearl dust. The second had edible fondant pearls on it. The third tier had the quilted look and then the top tier had random piping. Her color was celedon green and terra regina (coral). I thought the cake turned out very "Sherilyn - looking". I wasn't able to go to the wedding since I'd also volunteered to help with the food for the reception and that took every minute that could be spared apart from the cake. It was fun to see a lot of old friends at the wedding and even a former professor (Mr. Ed Overdorff). At 11:00 I got home, dropped into bed and lay there trying to decide if I'd get up early to take things to a yard sale I'd said that I'd help with. Sighh...Daniel made that decision for me since he was up before 7:00...again. So, we spent some time volunteering at the yard sale (which we're doing again next Saturday if anyone is interested), did some laundry, generally red up the house, and got two meals. Philip set up the boys swimming pool, watered my flowers and sprayed the mud off of our driveway, watched the boys and graded distance education papers. Good, busy day and now we're getting ready for the Lord's day tomorrow. Blessings!

Shade and Vegetable Gardens

When my mom and dad were here last month they helped me plant a shade garden by the house and also planted my vegetable garden. Both are doing very well! These pictures were taken last week so there is some change even to this week. I was also able to plant my flowers last week but I don't have any pictures of those. Seeing as Daniel has hacked two begonia plants to death I'm not sure how well my flowers are going to do this year. He also hacked his brother in the eye with a shovel...he's at that stage...hack at anything that's in the way.

Memorial day

Last Sunday we received a visit from our friends, Mark and Cyretha Horton and their two children. They stayed Sunday night and we took them to the Creation Museum on Monday. Allan was thrilled and Daniel enjoyed it once he realized the dinosaurs weren't real. They both enjoyed the swords that a young volunteer made them while we were waiting in line. Cyretha and I brought the children home around 3:00 so they could catch a nap before supper. We invited my in-laws for supper since they also know Mark well. We grilled hamburgers, hotdogs and had home-made ice cream...(which didn't turn out so great!). So it was a busy day but a very nice way to start a week.

It's a ...

BOY! No doubt about it. Sorry to all of those who were hoping for a little girl. We're tickled that the baby co-operated and now we start the challenge of finding a name for him. Allan mentioned the other night that perhaps we could name him Goliath. I think we'll skip on his suggestion!

Reasons

The reason that I didn't post this week like I said I was going to is because: Daniel, Allan and I all have bronchitis and Daniel also has an ear infection. This called for four Dr's appointments this week (The first Dr misdiagnosed the boys with allergies). I also had to grade papers and turn in my grades to the Registrar. I had two cakes, getting ready for one bridal shower, company for supper on Thursday (they came Wednesday but we'd forgotten that they'd been invited! AHHHHHH!!!), campmeeting is this week....you get the idea. So off I go to get things together for church tomorrow. BTW: our sonogram is Tuesday at 12:30...pray the child cooperates for us. Have a blessed Lord's day.

April 7, 2004

Allan entered this world 4 years ago on April 7th. I will have to say that none of the books I read, or advice I was given prepared me for what becoming a mother would do to me. You can't explain the feeling that comes when they place the little guy up on your chest for the first time and you realize this odd little creature belongs to you. Becoming a parent for the first time is tough - but he was the perfect child to break us in. Probably too perfect! Everyone warns you that the years pass so quickly but now I know it's true. Sleeping newborns become alert babies who become giggling toddlers who become talking machines who become best buddies. And here we are four years later - I'm so happy for a healthy, happy, moldable child who has brought so much laughter and is being a blessing to others.

We celebrated at Poppop and Gramme's house with a teddy bear cake (he wanted another train cake but I thought three out of four years was enough - we'll give the trains a break). We bought him the Little Bear series of books and so it went right along with the theme. We also spent the morning at the zoo and had a wonderful time until some (stupid - was what he called it) goat reached out and ate his zoo map. For whatever reason this distressed him to no end and he wished all kinds of horrible things on the poor creature. His main wish was that "I hope it gets really sick for eating my map." So though everyone around him was hilariously amused he was crying bitter tears. Oh, at the end of the video clip he gets a very alarmed look on his face - the wax from the candle splashed on his fingers and it surprised him.

His physical and verbal development are normal but what I've enjoyed watching most is his spiritual development. The other day Philip was taking one of his mentorees out to lunch and when Allan found out his daddy was leaving he ran out of the house, down the steps to the driveway hollering that he needed to pray with his daddy before he left. Philip stopped and then told me later that Allan had run up to the car and said, "I need to have a word of prayer with you. 'Dear Heavenly Father, Give daddy and Mr. Joel a safe trip out to eat. Amen.'" Where he heard that or learned is a mystery to us but we found it fascinating.

Several nights ago our family devotions were late so Daniel was already in bed when we gathered in the living room. Allan popped off his seat after we read the Scripture and finished singing asking, "Are we done?" Philip told him that we had to pray yet and was there anything that we needed to pray for. His response was, "Yes, we need to ask Jesus to forgive us of our sins." Since he's never said anything like that we affirmed that it was important to do this and Philip then asked him if he had any sins he needed to confess. Interestingly his head dropped and in a lowered voice he said yes. Philip and I both perked up and we questioned him what it was he had done that needed forgiven. "I'll tell God but not you" was his reply. Philip quickly reminded him that we tell mommy and daddy everything (in our house we have surprises but no secrets) and that the Bible says we're to confess our sins to one another so that we can pray for each other. He looked at us with such sad eyes and said, "I've been taking toys from Daniel and God told me not to do that." My mommy's heart was leaping for joy now knowing that God is talking to my little boy even when I'm not there to train and guide and his conscience is tenderly listening.

He's anxiously looking forward to starting school in the fall (we're homeschooling) and questions periodically how long he has to wait until the wonderful day arrives.

So though this is late...Happy Birthday Allan! We love you and are so thankful God gave you to us!

Busy Days are Upon Us

So why am I blogging? I'm taking a break from the million things that are calling my attention! These are the days when you could be booked every night of the week if you allowed yourself to be but in a little over a week it will all be over. I gave my last philosophy lecture on Wednesday and now I just have to wade through grading the philosophy papers. I intend to post more in depth later because I missed some great happenings over the past month: Allan's 4th birthday, my parent's visit, some nifty spring fun, cakes, etc. Here are a few things until I'm able to post again.

The day my parent's left for PA I sprayed a part of our driveway off and Daniel had such fun playing in the water...he was a total mess but was also totally happy. My parents planted a garden for me while they were here and helped me put in a shade garden. Even in the two weeks that they've been gone there is such a difference so I'll have to update the pictures and post them later.
