I have a two year old Stella Cherry tree that's the oddest thing I've seen! It has a leader but the first branches are 8 feet off the ground. Do I top the leader? Prune the branches? What needs to be done to encourage branches to form lower? I'm much better with apples - they're normal. This tree doesn't look "normal" to me! Anyone have any ideas or suggestions? The web wasn't much help because all the posts I read assume that the branches are going to start lower than that.

You should post this pic on a gardening forum. (Is this one of the ones we got you guys for Christmas? It's pretty- just strange ;o)
Charity - this is the one you all gave us for Christmas :o) The home orchard society forum advise me to lop the thing off about 4-5 feet up -That seems pretty radical but I do know that some fruit trees have to be pruned pretty vigorously and I'm afraid if I let it go another season it will be out of control.
This tickled me too! Such a funny and unusual tree. :) I wonder if it was improperly pruned in the nursery and cannot be made normal now... ? If I run across anything that might help, I'll send it your way.
So what did you decide to you to the poor cherry tree?
Well - the consensus seems to be that it needs topped off about 4-5 feet up with all the branches taken off. The leaves on the trunk should remain and may produce cherries next year. So - when winter comes and it becomes dormant I guess we'll do radical surgery on it and time will tell it's fate.
