Sunday Sermon?

We're at home for the second Sunday in a row but I have been enjoying hearing the Word. A sermon I enjoyed last week was from John Piper - some challenging worldview shifts here: The Plundering of Your Property and the Power of Hope  "Hope has a name."

And early this morning was reminded again that "meaning and satisfaction are not found in any of life's components but only in life's Creator." - "We collect the toys but God dispenses the batteries"
God can bless - but God can also withhold enjoyment until we see our blessings as gifts from Him. Thinking about goads and nails today. Dr. Berg's chapel message here.

Saturday Sermon

This week's sermon is geared for the beginning of  a new year. The most important thing we will do this year is maintain a fresh, vibrant relationship with God. One of the foundational ways of growing this relationship is to regularly immerse ourselves in His Word. This revelation of His will, His desires, His character - all intended to draw us to Himself.

The link to this sermon is found at Discipling New Converts which is the website that my brother-in-law has designed to help people read and understand the Bible. If you're looking for a Bible reading plan, this is an invaluable resource with the chronological reading plan and accompanying prayers.

Dr. Mark Minnick is known for his careful exegetical teaching and leading of his flock. This message was preached to his congregation at the beginning of  a new year and wonderful reminder of the importance of Bible reading to our growth as Christians.   "The Benefits of Reading Through the Bible In Its Entirety"

Saturday Sermon

"Meaning and satisfaction are not found in any of life's components but only in life's Creator." ~Jim Berg

The book of Ecclesiastes isn't usually a favorite of most people.  The picture it paints of the futility of life can be depressing. I barely cracked the book until hearing Dr. Berg give a sermon in chapel one day and since then this little book has been a constant reminder to me that if I'm looking for significance or permanence anywhere apart from a relationship with God, I'm "chasing after wind." My life only takes on meaning and I can only find deep satisfaction as I learn to know Him. The sermon I'm posting today is just the first sermon taken from a series that Dr. Berg preached on the book of Ecclesiastes. Some of the audio quality isn't the best through the series but this is the best material you'll find on this book.

Saturday Sermon

Romans 8:28-29. Of all the verses that are misunderstood in Christianity, this one is right near the top. As a teenager I struggled with that verse and for years heard basically the same thing: God takes everything and makes it good in the life of the believer. Soon after Philip and I started our relationship, I asked him to help me learn to read the Bible in such a way that I could understand and apply what I was reading. One of the first things that he told me was, "You have to read verses in context - of the verses surrounding it, the book itself, the author, other material in the same genre, ect." And this verse was at the top of the list of explanations. Verse 28 cannot be separated from verse 29.

This sermon was preached by Dr. Greg Mazak at a luncheon and is entitled One of the Best Loved and Most Misunderstood Verses.  Dr. Mazak was my professor for Introduction to Biblical Counseling at Bob Jones University.

Saturday Sermon

This week's sermon presents a view of what God lost in the Fall of man. Makes me have a whole new appreciation for God's grace and mercy to us.  The is the first part of a two part sermon:

Overcoming Profound Loss - Part 1

Saturday Sermon

This week's sermon comes from my former Dean at Bob Jones University. This is a sermon I listen to over and over when I'm tempted to be discouraged. Dr. Berg is a man committed to living the truth of God's Word and his studies on the character of God and spiritual formation has been very beneficial to my growth as a Christian.

Saturday Sermon

Someone asked me after my last post where I found sermons that would challenge and speak truth to my life. So I thought I would start doing a "Saturday Sermon" post of sermons/talks that have challenged me. Not all will come from preachers of my theological persuasion but the truth of God's Word doesn't change based on my theological camp. As with any communication- verbal or written - it's held up to the standard of God's Word, the truth is gleaned, and the chaff blown away.

To kick it off I'm starting with one of my favorite preachers. I'm not just saying that because I'm married to him. The greatest blessing of my life has been being married to a man who is first and foremost is committed to the truth of God's Word.

"Waging Successful Spiritual War" -  This sermon was preached in chapel here at GBSC at the beginning of this school year. Though he typically preaches exegetical sermons, this is a topical message.
